Summer may be slowly winding down, but it doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of the warm evenings we have left. Bonfires are some of the best ways to make sure the summer season goes out with a bang. Not only do they give you a chance to see your friends and family, but they also allow you to enjoy the beautiful outdoor weather. But if you’re going to host one of these gatherings in your backyard, you should have all the necessary items. Here is what you need for summer bonfires and how these things contribute to a great time.

A Designated Fire Pit

Before you even consider inviting people over for a bonfire, the first thing you should do is to set up a firepit. These areas are the ideal places to have a fire because they keep you at a reasonable distance from the flames and limit the number of flammable items near the fire itself. This way, you have a good time while protecting your yard from flying embers and ashes. So make sure you spend some time picking out the best firepit and placing it in a safe location.

Firewood and Kindling

The next thing you should gather is enough firewood and kindling material for the evening. Firewood is available everywhere, especially in the summer. However, you might find that purchasing it from your local grocery store is a bit more expensive than you’d initially expected. Fortunately, you can use the wood you already have on your property. Just make sure you use a quality log splitter to get each log around the same size.

Lawn Chairs

After that, see how many lawn chairs you have available for your guests to use. There’s nothing quite like kicking back next to a crackling fire on a cool summer night. In fact, it’s one of the most comfortable ways to enjoy these events, so check beforehand whether you have a chair for each of your visitors. If you don’t, consider asking your friends if they can bring their own.

Snacks and Drinks

Along with comfortable seating, you’ll also need the proper amount of food and drinks. Just like any barbecue needs ribs and burgers, no backyard event is complete without roasted marshmallows and melted chocolate. Make sure you have enough of these supplies for all your hungry guests.

Bug Spray

Another essential item you need for summer bonfires is a readily available can of bug spray. As long as the weather is still warm, insects of all kinds will come out in droves to sting or bite you—especially at night. So having some form of repellent will be important for keeping everyone comfortable.

A Bucket of Water

Since there’s no telling when a fire could suddenly get out of hand, you should keep a full bucket of water near the fire as well. This way, you can quickly extinguish any sparks that threaten to ignite your lawn or nearby furniture.
