Michael Pierce Addresses the City of Ridgely Mayor and Board About Several Issues.
Ridgely resident Michael Pierce presented a laundry list of concerns to Mayor Steve Jones and the Board of Alderman last Thursday night at the board’s regularly scheduled meeting.
Pierce asked about the status of Norris Brother’s $90,000 lawsuit against the city that was previously discussed in a January board meeting. Mayor Jones stated that the matter involved an ongoing law suit it could not be discussed in a public meeting.
Pierce then asked about the employment status of Josh Henson, a city water plant operator.
Mayor Jones said he was not certified when he left . Pierce then wanted to know why the plant operator been hourly rate was increased to $15 per hour when he was not certified?
Mayor Jones stated that Henson had left two weeks after receiving the pay increase.
Pierce then questioned Jones asked about the presence of the city attorney at board meetings.
He told Pierce that the attorney attended meetings only when his presence was needed because it cost the city too much to have him attend unless his services were required.
Pierce continued with his questioning inquiring about the city wide-cleanup. Mayor Jones explained there had been issues with the incinerator and they were going to have to come up with something else. Pierce asked if the city could cite Dyersburg Housing for not cleaning up the resident’s debris such as sofas and mattresses left on the roadside?
Mayor Jones stated Dyersburg Housing would be cited. Jackie Howell, a Ridgely city employee, stated Dyersburg Housing had a lot of turn over and they are cleaning up the debris.
Pierce then asked about the cleaning of ditches on Hardison Street to alleviate flooding? A discussion between the board and mayor revealed the ditches had not been cleaned.
Alderman Frankie Sharp stated the flooding was also in a low District area. Pierce final inquiry concerned the status of the city’s water wells.
Mayor Jones stated they were almost completed. Pierce then thanked the Mayor and Board of Alderman for their time.
City Alderman Frankie Sharp mentioned adopting a policy about Ridgely paying to have a police officer certified.
After much discussion the board voted to table this until next meeting. The motion was seconded by Alderman Brenda Crittenden. Alderman Brenda Crittenden made a motion to allow Woody Burton, Superintendent to be on the Library Board.
Alderman Frankie Sharp seconded the motion. Roll call was made with each Alderman voting yes.
There was a discussion among the Mayor and Board of Alderman concerning possible damage to Mr. Joe Riley’s law office caused by the city’s demolition of two downtown buildings. Mayor Jones made a motion to adjourn.
