Common Causes of Slips, Trips, and Falls

Did you know that slips, trips, and falls are the most common causes of workplace injuries? While most falls won't result in major harm, they can still cause serious injuries. To help you avoid slips, trips, and falls at work, here are the most common causes of them and what you can do to steer clear of them.

Wet Floors

A classic cause. Wet areas should be properly marked and cleaned immediately to prevent slips, trips, and falls. If working outdoors during the rain, tread carefully and avoid areas that seem especially saturated with water.

Loose Mats

Many workplaces will have mats near entrances and exits. While these mats are designed to keep the area clean and prevent falls, a mat that doesn't properly grip the floor can slide out from under your feet and make you take a tumble.

Slippery Soles

Slippery soles are another common cause of slips, trips, and falls. No matter where you work, we recommend wearing nonslip footwear, which have rubber outsoles that keep you from tripping in wet or slippery environments.

Icy Weather

Like its liquid form, frozen water can also cause you to slip and fall. If you're working outside in icy conditions, we recommend de-icing the area frequently. You can also wear slip-resistant boots to reduce the likelihood of an accident.

Obstructions

A messy work environment can also contribute to instances of slips, trips, and falls. For this reason, you should keep your work area clean. Don't leave papers, tools, and other items on the floor, or at the very least, keep them out of walkways.

Poor Lighting

It's hard to avoid hazards when you can't see them. Ensure the room you’re working in is well-lit and that you can see several feet in front of you.

Don't let yourself be the next victim of a slip, trip, or fall! You can easily avoid most job site accidents by acting vigilant.
