Low-Impact Exercises for People With COPD

Posted

Managing COPD is about more than simply buying an oxygen concentrator; it’s about figuring out how to enjoy a healthy lifestyle even while on oxygen. If you have a portable oxygen concentrator, there’s no reason you can’t work out and enjoy these low-impact exercises for people with COPD.

Swimming

Swimming is a perfect example of a low-impact exercise. When we talk about low impact, we mean that the activities are more about getting your blood pumping and staying active by using fluid motions as opposed to potentially jarring exercises like running or gymnastics. Swimming is ideal because it’s nearly impossible to impact your joints in the water.

Walking

Unlike running, which involves your feet coming into contact with the ground quickly and forcefully, walking allows you to stay moving while reducing impact. You may not think that walking could be very beneficial, but walking for 30 minutes to an hour each day will strengthen your bones, reduce body fat, and decrease your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Lifting Light Weights

If you haven’t exercised in a while, simple tasks like lifting a gallon of milk could become a hassle. Lifting light weights (we aren’t trying to be bodybuilders) can help you stay fit for daily life while avoiding strenuous activities that can damage your joints.

Cycling

You may want a bit more of a challenge than walking provides. Instead of going for a run, which can cause joint pain, try cycling instead. Hopping on a bike (either a real or a stationary one) is a great way to pursue cardiovascular fitness while keeping things low impact. Try going to a spin class at the gym if you’re up for it, but remember not to push yourself too hard.

If you don’t already have one, talk to your doctor about the benefits of portable oxygen concentrators. While you can walk in place with a heavy tank, getting a portable concentrator frees up your movement to allow for all sorts of exercises.

Now that you know these low-impact exercises for people with COPD, work out while keeping your joints and body healthy!
