Year in review: Getting somewhat back to normal

One of the strangest and saddest stories of the year occurred on March 12 in nearby Obion when a camel at Shirley Farms attacked and killed Bobby Matheny II, 42 of Ridgely and Tommy Gunn, 67, of Obion. The camel had to be euthanized

Covid was slowing, businesses reopened, prices rising and the government said unemployment was at a low. That’s how the WORLD started January 2022.
Lake County started the New Year off with Willie L. Gates Jr. (Date of Birth 02/09/1972) being arrested and Charged with Murder and Attempted Murder in a double shooting in the 200 block of Cherry Street.
Flyers, Posters and Media ads were seen everywhere asking for help in identifying the Killers of Ms. Birdie Terry (Date of Death January 10, 2021) and Derrick Swift (Date of Death October 11, 2020).
On a slightly different note, Jimmy Dale Snyder took on the role of Ridgely Chief of Police.
President Joseph R. Biden signed an annual PROCLAMATION on National Black History Month.
January ended with the incinerator being shut down and the State issuing fines for violated operation regulations.
February came in with a little ice and snow. The whole region was covered with a chilling blanket of sleet. That didn’t stop the ground breaking for Dollar General Store in Ridgely . Jamarius “Tink” Williams signed to Arkansas Tech University on February 2nd.
Ms. Sherry Darnell signed a proclamation recognizing School Counseling Week for Lake County Schools.

A mother and her daugher were arrested in connection with murder of Tiptonville resident Willie I. Gates, Jr. Following a search of the Gates’ residence in the 400 block of Tipton Street Gates and Giles were taken into custody and charged with numerous felony charges and booked into the Lake County Jail.

March roared with County Mayor Announcing Plans to Retire after 30 years of Public Service.
Date for the 18th Annual Reelfoot Lake Eagle Festival was announced for March 4-6.
“Safe Room Grant” If the County is approved, a disaster safe building capable of holding 1,000 people will be built in Tiptonville. Our County was saddened with the accidental deaths of Mr. Bobby Matheny II and Mr. Tommy Gun as they attempted to sooth a camel in stress. Alexia Sanders scored a 28 on ACT.
Mr. Jack Mauldin was awarded TASA Larry Griffin Paramedic of the Year.
Jerry Reese was awarded at the Robert E. and Jenny D. Discovery Awards Gala Fundraiser.
“Boosted Brad”, owner Brad Barnes won BEST in Show of Show & Best Sportster with his 187 FXR in Daytona, Florida. Jeremy Hopper placed second in the state G:No-Til Irrigated Class with a yield of 286.7458 bushels per acre.
LCHS FFA brought home 3 State Degree Awards from the 94th Tennessee FFA Convention. Lake County High School Earned FAFSA Champion Status.
Lake County School Board Bids Farewell to Ms. Sherry Darnell.
High School Class of 70 gathered for their 50th Class Reunion.
Ridgely Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for their New Dollar General Store located at 491 S. Headden Drive.
April 2022 brings Lake County arrest results in the TBI Investigation into Witness Threatening and Intimidating in 200 Block Cherry Street murder. (Tara L. Gates, Date of Birth 7/29/76 and daughter, Cassius U. Giles, Date of Birth 5/19/02).
Ballard Found Guilty……Jordan Ballard, 28, was tried and found guilty of aggregated kidnapping, rape, aggravated assault and assault.
Primary Election candidates are beginning to be announced.
Head football coach, Coach Cory Quinn in Heading back to his home State, Mississippi after two seasons at Lake County High School.
Miguel Abbott and Aaliyah Swift were crowned Lake County High School Prom King and Queen.
May brought Jonathan Canada to Lake County High School as their Head Football Coach.
Lake County Court Honored Mr. Howard Todd with a PROCLAMATION.
Lake County High School announced Meador & Yates Top of Class for 2022.
Board of Education recognized Teachers and staff members retiring.
LCHS FFA Host First Annual Banquet.
Team 4 Success Hosted ribbon cutting at open house for a new facility.
To end May with a smile, the First Annual Drive-Thru Baby Shower was held. (What’s next?)

Lake County High School football Summer Workouts Begin and Summer Reading starts off with a BANG!!

The Dollar General Store in Ridgely opened its doors to the public on March 31. The store is located at 491 S. Headden Drive.

Oceans of possibilities at the Tiptonville Public Library as their Summer Reading begins. Tiptonville Public Library also received an annual donation of $2,000.00 from Cox Oil Company.
Thank you Lori Forrest and other library employees for providing Lake County’s future teachers, businessman, County Officials, farmers and just maybe President of the United States with a fun and safe place to learn.
Gibson Electric Membership Corporation presented Jillian Stanley, daughter of Jason and Misty Stanley, with a $1,000 Cooperative Creative Writing Scholarship.
Alexia Sanders is accepted into Academies at Harvard and will be starting her Pre-Med I Course.
A Proclamation for Juneteenth Day of Observance 2022. Juneteenth is a day to reflect on both bandage and freedom.
Gov. Bill Lee decades June 15th as Elder Abuse Awareness Day across Tennessee. Life Beat, Walk For Life. All proceeds will be used to purchase a mobile unit to provide FREE ultrasounds and pregnancy test to mothers of all ages.
County Commissioners approve waste management to Asher Waste. The county will be purchasing a dump trailer that Asher will periodically take to the landfill.
Science Camp, Jr. Ranger Camp, Team 4 Success Camp and campground activities are in full swing for the summer along with Sunset Pontoon Cruises and fireworks.
