Tips for Avoiding Allergens in Your Home

Ragweed and pollen are inevitable when the seasons change, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do anything to keep our homes as allergen free as possible. With our tips for avoiding allergens in your home, you can have a far more relaxing, sniffle-free season.

Do Regular Spring Cleaning

When we think of spring cleaning, we tend to think of it as one big event. We beat out the rugs, air out the rooms, get rid of all that winter clutter, and are done. However, with all the dust and pollen constantly blowing into the house, you may want to consider making spring cleaning a regular event. A few cleaning tasks you’ll want to do more of in the spring as a way to avoid allergens in your home include:

  • Sweeping
  • Dusting
  • Mopping
  • Cleaning bathrooms
  • Washing linens

Many people also use springtime as the perfect excuse to air-dry clothes and sheets outside. However, doing so can cause outdoor pollen and dust to become trapped in the fibers. Sticking to the electric dryer may be a better idea if you struggle with allergies.

Pro Tip: Consider Fabric Choice

All fabrics are made differently. Some have bigger gaps in their weaves, which are more likely to trap dust and other allergens. An unexpected benefit of cotton in sheets and other clothes is that the fibers are so tight that they leave less room for dust.

Change Out Air Filters

Air filters remove particles such as dust, pollen, and dander from the air. Experts usually recommend that you change your home’s air filters once every 90 days. That adds up to roughly once per season. Of course, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, many of us go much longer without changing the filters. But if you’re going to pick one season to remember this task, spring is it. Changing the filters and ensuring the ventilation in your home is working will keep the air clean and allergen free.

Mind Your Pets

Pet-owners adore having their animal friends around. However, dog fur, kitty litter, or even dust from a hamster cage can be a strong source of dust and dander in your home. Luckily, there are ways to reduce the allergens your animals bring in the house; for example:

  • Bathing your pets regularly
  • Staying on top of cleaning the litter box
  • Avoiding having your pets sleep with you
  • Clean out cages regularly

Allergens are as inevitable as the changing seasons. Fortunately, with a little strategy, your home can be an allergy-free oasis all season long.
